 RBI releases Allahabad Bank, Corporation Bank, Dhanlaxmi Bank from PCA 

 

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has removed two public sector banks-Corporation Bank and Allahabad Bank and one private sector bank- Dhanlaxmi Bank from PCA (Prompt Corrective Action) framework allowing them to resume their normal lending activities. 

• According to the Board for Financial Supervision (BFS), Allahabad Bank and Corporation Bank had received Rs 6,896 crore and Rs 9,086 crore respectively which has shored up their capital funds and also increase their loan loss provision.

• Dhanlaxmi Bank was found to be not breaching any of the risk thresholds of the PCA framework, Hence decided to take Dhanlaxmi Bank out of PCA framework.

Hemant Bhargava appointed as Non-Executive Chairman of IDBI Bank

 

• IDBI Bank has appointed Hemant Bhargava as Non-Executive Whole time Chairman for a period of 3 years or until he continues in his position at LIC.

• Bhargava is currently the Chairman (in-charge) and Managing Director of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).

• The State-owned life insurer, LIC is now the majority shareholder in IDBI Bank with 51% stake

Assam launched PRANAM Commission 

 

• Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has launched the PRANAM Commission for the protection of parents of state government employees.

• The Parent Responsibility and Norms for Accountability and Monitoring (PRANAM) Bill, stated to be the first-of-its-kind bill in the country.

• PRANAM Bill was approved by the cabinet last year, makes it mandatory for state government employees to look after their parents and unmarried Divyang siblings who do not have their own sources of income.

West Bengal launched 'Banglar Shiksha' web portal

 

• West Bengal Education Minister, Partha Chatterjee has launched a web portal "Banglar Shiksha" to provide real-time data on state-run and aided schools.

• This portal is first-of-its-kind in the state as well as in the country and it should be fully functional by May 1, 2019.

• The portal will store real-time data of 1.5 crore students, 5 lakh teachers and 1 lakh schools.

HRD Ministry Launched SHREYAS Scheme

 

• Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar launched SHREYAS Scheme to provide industry apprenticeship opportunities to fresh graduate.

• This initiative will help graduate polish their skills directly from industry experts and could bring India closer to its aim of skilling its youth population to make them more employable.

• This scheme is a programme basket comprising the initiatives of three central ministries, including the HRD, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and the Ministry of Labour and Employment

• The full name of SHREYAS is Scheme for Higher Education Youth in Apprenticeship and Skills.

 

16th edition of BioAsia 2019 held in Hyderabad

 

• The 16th edition of BioAsia 2019 Asia's largest biotechnology and life-sciences forum was conducted in Hyderabad, Telangana.

• The conference was inaugurated by the Governor of Telangana E.S.L Narasimhan.

• The theme of the conference was "Life Sciences 4.0 - Disrupt the Disruption".

• BioAsia is an annual event, largely focuses on re-imaging healthcare after technological disruptions.

• 'Life Sciences 4.0: transforming health care in India' was launched by EY. The report discusses the descriptive impact of the fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) on the health care ecosystem in India.

Inclusive Internet Index 2019: India ranks 47th

 

• India ranked 47th out of 100 countries in the Facebook 'Inclusive Internet Index 2019' and maintained its previous year rank.

• 'Inclusive Internet Index' is prepared by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) for Facebook.

• The index was expanded to include 100 countries which will represent 94% of the world's population and 96% of global GDP.

• Sweden topped the index followed by Singapore (2nd) and USA (3rd).

Muhammadu Buhari re-elected as Nigerian President

 

• Muhammadu Buhari re-elected as Nigerian President, he beat Atiku Abubakar by close to four million votes to emerge a winner. 

• He becomes only the second man to achieve the feat to securing two straight terms. The first president was Olusegun Obasanjo who won terms (1999-2007).
