Phayeng village of Manipur becomes India's 1st Carbon-Positive Settlement

Phayeng Village, a scheduled caste village of the Chakpa community in Imphal West district of Manipur has come India's first carbon-positive settlement.

National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change (NAFCC) is a central sector scheme launched in 2015-16 to support concrete adaptation activities which mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.

The village is surrounded by three densely forest hillocks with fruit trees at centre and a stream flowing through it. The villagers have set some rules for the protection of the forest and wildlife. According to the rules, hunting is completely prohibited in the village except for once a year when a deer is usually killed as a sacrifice to the "forest gods".
