Question Paper from: IIT JEE Main 2021 TestSeries Paper 2

Which of the following statements is not true for halogens?

1:

All but fluorine show positive oxidation states.

2:

All are oxidizing agents

3:

All form monobasic oxyacids.

4:

Chlorine has the highest electron gain enthalpy.

Solution:
Chapter Name: P Block Elements
Difficulty Level: Moderate

Fluorine due to its high electronegative. It shows only -1 oxidation states but other elements of the halogen family show -1 to +7 oxidation states.

Halogens acts as a good oxidizing agent because of high electronegativity and high electron affinity which makes them take electrons very much easily and readily take electrons from other elements.

Oxy acid of halogens are monobasic HOX, HXO2, HXO3

Chlorine has high electron gain enthalpy due to its large size & presence of d-orbitals.
